Prague was our first European destination. We visited in April of 2015 and had a wonderful time! Initially we were a bit apprehensive about traveling abroad. Would we be welcome? Would our inability to speak the local language be an issue? Within 30 minutes of arriving, all of our concerns were gone. The people are welcoming and our lack of language skills were not an issue. Of course, we learned some basic phrases, "Hello", "Good evening", "Thank you" and "Please" go a long way in any language. Google translate's convenient app was helpful too. But most people understood and spoke English.
The sights of Prague were stunning. The presidential palace, sitting above the city is impressive and even more breathtaking in the evening. The palace guards perform a changing ceremony similar to the one in front of London's Buckingham Palace, but with far less crowds. The astronomical clock is another site not to be missed. Its medieval architecture contrasts beautifully with the kooky clock face and animated caricatures perform every hour. The Charles Bridge is filled with tourists by day, but in the evening, takes on an ominous feel as the evening fog rolls in.
The food! OMG the food is amazing. The roast pork seems to be a local specialty in Prague and we indulged in it on more than one occasion and there is nothing better to wash it down than some of the local beer. Neither one of us are big beer drinkers but the beer in Prague blew us both away. You definitely need to try it if you visit! Got a sweet tooth? Then you'll love this town. They make this dessert called a Trdelnik. It's like a churro rolled around a tube and then cooked over an open flame. It's then rolled in cinnamon sugar. This dessert alone is worth a trip to Prague.
