We visited Madrid in August of 2018 and we know what you are thinking. Isn't it super hot in Spain during the month of August? Yes! It is hot! Very hot! We knew that going into this trip but nevertheless, we went anyway and we had an amazing time.
In some ways, Madrid is your typical capital city. Large, expansive and full of people. However, we found that Madrid was also full of vibrant culture and delicious food. Not to mention that all those people were warm and welcoming. Our hotel was in the Atocha district, near Madrid's primary train station. It was a central location to most of Madrid's historical sights, including the Presidential Palace (definitely not to be missed).
Our dear friend, Deborah, also joined us on our trip. It was a first time in Madrid for all three of us. So we were able to discover the beautiful sights together. Out trip to the Presidential Palace and neighboring Santa Maria Cathedral. The palace courtyard is expansive with sweeping views of rolling hills of the palace grounds and the Manzanares River. The palace was the top item on our use see list and it didn't disappoint!
The food scene in Madrid is vibrant and delicious. We ate a lot of tapas from marinated vegetables to Jamon Iberico. Every bite was better than the last.
As we neared the end of our time in Madrid, we worked out way to the nearby Atocha train station (to continue our travels in Sevilla). Upon walking into the station, we were greeted by and enormous glass topped atrium filled with lovely tropical palms and the usual shopping delights. Spain's public transportation is clean, efficient and best of all...timely.
All in all we really enjoyed our time in Madrid. Was it our favorite vacation destination, no (see Rome and Barcelona). But don't let that stop you from visiting this beautiful city.
